When Your Brain Is on Fire: Leading Through a Million Ideas

There are seasons where my brain is simply on fire. Ideas for the business, for the brand, for the people I lead, arriving faster than I can write them down. If you are a builder, you know this feeling, and you also know its shadow: the week where you started six things and finished none of them, and the fire that felt like a gift starts to feel like a tax. I used to treat those seasons as a discipline problem. I do not anymore. A brain full of ideas is not a problem, it is weather. The work is learning to farm in it.

Not every idea is assigned to you

This is the sentence that changed how I lead: some ideas come to you, and some ideas come through you. An idea arriving in your head does not mean it is yours to execute. Some are meant to be handed to a leader who is ready to grow. Some are meant to be planted and revisited in a year. And some are just your mind stretching its legs. When I stopped treating every spark as an assignment, I stopped burning my calendar down to honor sparks.

The three piles

When the fire season comes, I sort everything into three piles, fast and without ceremony. Pile one: this feeds what I am already building, do it now. Pile two: this is real but it belongs to a future season, write it down where I will actually find it. Pile three: this is someone else's growth opportunity, give it away with trust. The sorting takes minutes. The peace it buys lasts weeks, because every idea has a home and none of them are circling my head at two in the morning asking to be remembered.

Momentum loves a finished thing

Here is what I have noticed in myself and in every leader I coach: energy compounds on completion, not on beginnings. Six open projects feel like progress and drain you like debt. One finished thing, even a small one, pays energy back into the account. So in the seasons where everything is exciting, I protect one rule above all: whatever I start this week, something also gets finished this week. The fire stays a gift as long as it keeps producing light and not just heat.

If your brain is on fire right now, I am not going to tell you to calm down. I am going to tell you to sort the pile, hand something beautiful to somebody ready, finish one thing, and let the season be what it is. That is not less ambition. That is ambition with a steward. ✨
